Today, I went to the vet to get my second set of shots. I was a very good boy and Dr. Gillis thinks I am really cute! :-) I am now 4.25 pounds. I was only 2.4 pounds when I came home the first time. So, I am growing very quickly. I love to play with a measuring cup that I stole from the kitchen one day and used dryer sheets are my other favorite thing. I play hard and then I crash on my mom and dad and take a little nap. I am learning a lot and having a lot of fun.

Deacon goes to the Vet

Gil and I took Deacon to the vet today. He was very well behaved. We really liked the doctor, Ruth Gillis. She said that Deacon is very healthy. He had a heartworm and flea treatment because he has some fleas from his previous owners. He will go back in 2 weeks for his next set of shots. The doctor also commented that he had beautiful markings. We were proud puppy parents!

Deacon sleeping with his new "pup." This little puppy has a thing that sounds like a heartbeat inside and is supposed to help with seperation anxiety an sleeping better at night. We are exhausted from being up with Deacon for the last 3 nights. The vet said it keep him awake as much as possible,but he will go to sleep while playing with his toys. As you can see, both of the above pictures were taken during the day and he is SLEEPING!

He is still cute today! He had us up a lot during the night last night...puppies are very similiar to human babies! He wanted to bark and play at 3 a.m. He has slept a lot today. We hope that does not mean that he is going to be up again tonight! He has had no accidents in the house today and seems to be adjusting really well.

I was able to spend nearly a week with my brother and his family. It was a fun week. We always have a great time when we visit their house. Noelle is getting to be quite the little lady. She is growing up so fast. She is very funny. She is very smart. And I just lover her so much.

Uncle George

This past week, we were able to spend a few days in Charleston visiting with Uncle George. It is always good when we can visit there. It is just a little over 3 hours to get there, so we are not exhausted from the trip. Charleston is one of our favorite cities. And Uncle George is one of our FAVORITE uncles. He is a great host and has introduced us to some of our all-time favorite restaurants. We chuckled on Friday night because we picked up some great Greek gyros, ate on the back porch and then all lounged in the living room reading and computing --how dull!!! We are all comfortable with each and just enjoy spending time together. It was a great evening. It was a good few days for Gil and I just to get away and relax. Mission accomplished!!!!!

Last week, Gil and I spent most of the week in Washington, DC for the CBF (Cooperative Baptist Fellowship) General Assembly. The meetings went very well and Gil and I both attended some really good workshops. We also were able to reconnect with some of our dear friends. Attending this meeting each year is almost like going to a family reunion. It is a wonderful time of fellowship. Gil and I also enjoy being able to attend worship and just be able to worship. When you are on staff at a church, you rarely get to sit through a service and truly worship because you usually have to "work." So, this meeting is a highlight for us each year. Gil and I get to sit together and worship beside each other....that is a good thing. We did a little sight seeing and I have included some of the pics. Enjoy!

Today, Gil and I went to Reynolda Gardens. Reynolda Gardens is right here in Winston near Wake Forest University. The Reynolda House (the former residence of R. J. Reynolds) is now owned by Wake Forest University. The house is now an art museum. I love the gardens, especially this time of year. We usually visit in May, but May was so hot that we did not go until today. Today was a very nice day in Winston with the high being in the low 80's with a light breeze. Unfortunately, some of the flowers had already bloomed and were trimmed back. As you will see, there were still plenty of beautiful flowers to see. The rose garden is absolutely beautiful and incredibly fragrant. Gil spent much of the time in the garden watching cardinals. There were several cardinal couples flying around the gardens. Gil's Granny was from North Carolina and loved cardinals. She called them red birds. I am convinced that she loved the "red birds" because there are so many of them here. It was nice to see them today and think of Granny. Gil and I often talk about how much we miss her. She was a wonderful southern lady that you could not help but love. She was dearly loved. Today, we were reminded of her as we watched the "red birds" fly around the gardens. I hope you enjoy the pictures as much as Gil and I enjoyed walking through the garden.

First Day at FBC High Point

Today was an AWESOME day! It was my first day serving First Baptist Church High Point as their Minister to Children. It was overwhelming meeting all the new people and learning our way around the campus. Gil and I were both welcomed warmly and we both left feeling very much at home. It was a good feeling. God has lead us to a new and exciting journey. We know that the road may not always be smooth, but we really feel that we will have much support as we travel down the road. I look forward to getting to build relationships there and begin working with the children and all involved in the children's ministry. God has brought us to this place and today was very affirming that we have followed His call. Gil and I covet your prayers as we seek to do what God would have us do in this new place. Here a couple of pics of our first day.

All in a Day's Drive

Today, Gil and I just got in the car and went for a drive. For the children of Jack Larkin, a car ride is a very relaxing event. My dad used to put me in the car in the wee hours of the morning when I was fussing as a baby and drive me around until I went to sleep. When my dad was sick with cancer, I remember taking really long drives with him because it calmed him. I would do anything for one more ride with my dad.

So, with all the stress of recent events in my life I just wanted to go for a ride today. Gil and I love to be in the car together. Gil loves driving down the curvy mountain roads and I love looking at all the scenery. We stop when we want and go for walks or take pictures. It was a good and relaxing day for both of us. We went up to Virginia (only about 45 minutes from Winston) and got on the Blue Ridge Parkway. We went east on the parkway towards Roanoke. We stopped at Mabry Mill. Mabry Mill is a very beautiful spot on the parkway. We walked around the mill and watched the ducks. The ducks were quite active and entertaining. The weather was perfect today. The temperature was in the mid 70's with a light, cool breeze. We wound our way through the parkway seeing some pretty spring flowers and we even spotted one deer. We followed the parkway all the way to Rocky Mount and then started heading back toward Winston. We came back a different way than other times we have gone to the parkway. It was a nice and scenic trip back down highway 221 through Martinsville. Eventually, we made our way back to Winston. For part of the way, we really were not sure where we were headed and were just hoping we were going toward home. We were and here are some pics from our journey. Enjoy!

My brother, Shane, graduated from Columbus State University on May 12th with a degree in history. It was a great weekend celebrating his accomplishments. We are all so proud of him! We also were blessed that our neighbors (Deb and Paul) that we grew up with and have become like parents to us were able to surprise Shane and come to his graduation. They spent several days with us and it was a wonderful time to reminisce and create new memories. It was the first time they met Shane's daughter, Noelle. Of course, they fell in love with her and became Nana Deb and Poppy. As the pictures show....a good time was had by all!!!!

Gil's parents are in town this weekend because Gil will be preaching his first sermon this Sunday. So, where do the 2 Baptist ministers take the parents? First a winery and then an Irish pub for lunch!!! :-) We visited Richard Childress Winery in Lexington, NC. It is a beautiful setting and facility. The tour was very interesting. Gil and his parents did a wine tasting, but I was a good Baptist! ;-) Above are some pics from the day.

Gil and I spent spring break with my brother, Shane, his wife, Dana and my little niece, Noelle. We love spending time with them, but this time was special because we were able to spend a lot of one on one time with Noelle. She is not only a beautiful child, but she is very smart and extremely funny. She moves much faster now, so it is hard to get good pics of her, but I still try.

God sent us to North Carolina to pursue ministry. I serve First Baptist Church Statesville as their children's minister and Gil attends Wake Forest University Divinity School. We have been blessed to move to a beautiful state (although I must admit I do miss Florida) and today I want to post some pics of the Wake Forest University campus. I love spending time on campus because it is really a gorgeous place. I hope you enjoy these glimpses of Wake Forest University.

Our First Tour of Old Salem

Gil's Uncle George came to visit this weekend. He really came to see a Bob Dylan concert, but we were a nice bonus! :-) We have had a good visit. Today, we toured Old Salem. Old Salem is a Moravian settlement that was here in the 1700's [prior to the Revolutionary War]. It was a really interesting tour with folks dressed in period costumes in each building. We really enjoyed our afternoon there. While George and Gil went up to see another church on a hill, I found a bench near a beautiful flower patch to rest my weary legs. While I was sitting there this beautiful butterfly came by and landed on one of the flowers. It stayed for quite a while and I was able to get a few good pics of him. It was a very good day.

It is obvious from my blog that I love flowers. I also love to do cake decorating. Although I must admit that I have not done as much with my smaller kitchen in Winston-Salem. Next month, my brother, Randy, is getting married and not only am I performing the ceremony, but I am also making the cake. They want roses, so I experimented (for the first time) with fondant and made some roses. I think they turned out pretty good. I am excited about making the cake and seeing how it comes together.

Theses are some of my favorites. Especially the iris and the magnolia below. I took these at the Magnolia Plantation in Charleston a couple of years ago. Gil's parents have their master bedroom decorated in magnolias and we gave them a framed picture of the magnolia below. I marvel at flowers and how God made them so delicate and beautiful.

Gil and I went to a Christian educators conference in Charleston in March. The city is always beautiful, but it was amazing in the spring. Blooms everywhere! Gil and I love Charleston, but it was a treat to be there in the spring. Gil's uncle, George, lives in Charleston, so it is always good to get to Charleston.
